Vic Rattlehead Rebirth by under18carbon Vic Rattlehead Rebirth by under18carbon
Prepare the patients scalp
To peel away
Metal caps his ears
He'll hear not what we say
Solid steel visor
Riveted cross his eyes
Iron staples close his jaws
So no one hears his cries

Um yeah I had to. I'm still saving money to get an electric, this seemed like a good chance to try to win one... oh well! I originally never intended on entering the contest, heck, as soon as I read the announcement, up till one week I dare not even enter the contest gallery! I was that afraid. Who wouldn't be jealous really looking at all those entries? dA has lots of talented people and their entries are trully mind blowing, and I was a little sad of the fact that I've never tinkered with Photoshop or done any manip work before - so why bother, right?

But in the end I decided to give it a go anyway. Never know what might happen... yeah. :|

So, here it is folks. A total Photoshop n00b's take on Vic Rattlehead. It's my first time ever doing a manip and brushwork... so it's a little rough in places. Sketched the design first, vectored it in Illustrator and then colours in Photoshop.

Bone textures from : ~fritostock
Other textures from 3DExcellence.

Comments, constructive critism, favourites always welcome.

Thanks.

You can enter more than once, correct?
I think you should have entered them seperately. The first one/the vector is excelent, but the second is lacking. I know you're a nuub and all to PS, but the bones look very flat.
Tip: Most of us 'oldies' [lol] don't use bevel&emboss so obviously, because...well, it's obvious. If you were to look at a human bone, it wouldn't have perfect edges like that, it would have some bumps and curves, which would reflect shadows differently. They also wouldn't cut off so sharply(the nose for example), because the bone would curve in slowly, adding some shadows and such.
(This is turning out to be more than one tip. :P)
You also have to think in terms of 'layers of material'. The head is on top of the crossbones, so it would cast a shadow onto them(keep your lightsource in mind, which by the way, you've done well so far).

Okok, I'll stop now. The rest is fairly good for a nuub, so I'll give ya credit there. =P The rust is actually better than most people would have done, so congrats on that.

Overall, the vector & shapes are excelent, gj man. =)

Yes, you could enter more than once. The reason I decided to put them together is simply because they're the same design, only one is coloured and one is b/w... so I really did not see the reason to submit two entries when they're basically just the same. :hmm:

Thank you so much for your tips  To be honest this was more of a one shot thing from me, but of course if in the near future I decide on playing around in PS again I will definitely pay attention to what you've said. I really appreciate the time you put into typing all that :)

Thank you once again!

 I figure, [1] you have a better chance of winning with two submissions, and [2] uhm. Well. It's really point one. XD Just, they might like the vector, but not the colored, and won't pick it because of the colored one. :P

You're welcome. Can't wait to see more PS work from ya~ =P

That's really some of the better brushwork I've seen, you seem to have got the knack of it.
The textures are really great too, though I really like the original flat b/w a lot more.

That's really just a preference call against busy heavy-metal stuff.

Good luck, you've got my vote! :headbang:

wow, for a first go that is definetly good.
on a critical note, adding some kind of backdrop would make it way better i reckon. it just seems a little empty
i wish i could give you some pointers on the photoshop technique, but you are better than me! sorry i cant help there.
