Barrett Strong sure had the right idea, eh?

My dad has always told me to keep track of how much money I spend, and while I actually started doing that while I was in university, I have never pulled through and done one for an entire complete year. So in 2011, I was determined to make sure I jot down each and every single cent I spend, and categorize them accordingly.

This then, is how I, a 23-year old designer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, deals with money and expenses.

I hope it's not too confusing to understand, it's my first time doing something like this.

Brilliant idea, and well executed. Also, I do have a bit of a soft spot for statistics

And since it's right at the start of the year, I've decided to track my expenses this year. They're looking a bit scary at the moment, but hopefully they should stabilise a bit once I get all the one-off expenses out of the way.

I wondered how you could pull off spending so little on groceries, then I saw how much you spent eating out.

That definitely is the silent killer of budgets, especially mine. People tend to fret over the cost of gasoline, that video game that they probably didn't need in the first place, but never think much of dropping 20 to 30 bucks on a dinner out with friends, and that's not even including alcohol and assuming you're only paying for yourself. Do that two to three times every week, and it adds up.

Anyway, neat project and something I should probably do for myself.

I'm hoping to cut down on eating out this year and try cooking more, although by doing that of course my spending for groceries is going to shoot up. Hopefully what I save from not having to eat out daily would show when the year ends.

That is so true though, I agree with you. A friend of mine commented that he spends nearly RM1k on food alone every month.

looking at it again and again just make me admire you more n more dear Shan. hahaha... how could u spend only 4K plus fore meals? Gosh... now I start to think this is actually my one month's expense only but you dragged it for entire year!!! Awesome! Promise I'll do keep track on what I spend now. Cant stop jaw dropping Shan!

actually i started to do this since i was in high school.. (I started to earn a living when i was 16) but at the end of the day/ month... the amount i have spent just scared me to death... I spent soooo much and unfortunately, nothing in the list i could cut off... So one day, I just decided not to keep track anymore.. hahaha.
But your work really makes me think twice now. Soooo eager to start it again! ^^ Will add this in my Revolution of 2012 then.

I know what you mean. When the first half of the year ended, I didn't count the specifics but the overall figure of how much I spent and it was quite scary. It wasn't exactly a lot of money, but then again you start thinking about all those purchases that you didn't have to make or could have lessened substantially. Glad to hear you're going to do it too then!

I've always kept track of my expenses up until six weeks ago or so, and I'm pretty sure that during those six weeks I've spent the most. But shit, I never thought of making anything as awesome as this with them. Bastard. Now I feel like stabbing you. I've been wanting to work on some illustrations myself, but fuck... this shit I've gotten myself into isn't helping. -Yes, I'm venting and whining again, this time in a dA comment.
