Money, That's What I Want by under18carbon Money, That's What I Want by under18carbon
Barrett Strong sure had the right idea, eh?

My dad has always told me to keep track of how much money I spend, and while I actually started doing that while I was in university, I have never pulled through and done one for an entire complete year. So in 2011, I was determined to make sure I jot down each and every single cent I spend, and categorize them accordingly.

This then, is how I, a 23-year old designer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, deals with money and expenses.

I hope it's not too confusing to understand, it's my first time doing something like this. :stare:

Thank you to thenounproject for the symbols.

Brilliant idea, and well executed. Also, I do have a bit of a soft spot for statistics =P

And since it's right at the start of the year, I've decided to track my expenses this year. They're looking a bit scary at the moment, but hopefully they should stabilise a bit once I get all the one-off expenses out of the way.

I wondered how you could pull off spending so little on groceries, then I saw how much you spent eating out.

That definitely is the silent killer of budgets, especially mine. People tend to fret over the cost of gasoline, that video game that they probably didn't need in the first place, but never think much of dropping 20 to 30 bucks on a dinner out with friends, and that's not even including alcohol and assuming you're only paying for yourself. Do that two to three times every week, and it adds up.

Anyway, neat project and something I should probably do for myself.

I'm hoping to cut down on eating out this year and try cooking more, although by doing that of course my spending for groceries is going to shoot up. Hopefully what I save from not having to eat out daily would show when the year ends.

That is so true though, I agree with you. A friend of mine commented that he spends nearly RM1k on food alone every month. :|

actually i started to do this since i was in high school.. (I started to earn a living when i was 16) but at the end of the day/ month... the amount i have spent just scared me to death... I spent soooo much and unfortunately, nothing in the list i could cut off... So one day, I just decided not to keep track anymore.. hahaha.
But your work really makes me think twice now. Soooo eager to start it again! ^^ Will add this in my Revolution of 2012 then. =)

I know what you mean. When the first half of the year ended, I didn't count the specifics but the overall figure of how much I spent and it was quite scary. It wasn't exactly a lot of money, but then again you start thinking about all those purchases that you didn't have to make or could have lessened substantially. Glad to hear you're going to do it too then! :aww:

I've always kept track of my expenses up until six weeks ago or so, and I'm pretty sure that during those six weeks I've spent the most. But shit, I never thought of making anything as awesome as this with them. Bastard. Now I feel like stabbing you. I've been wanting to work on some illustrations myself, but fuck... this shit I've gotten myself into isn't helping. -Yes, I'm venting and whining again, this time in a dA comment.

That shit always happens, the moment you don't keep track, everything starts shooting up. :stare: You can do something even awesomer - an infographic mograph piece. If I wasn't lazy, I would do it. You should have stabbed me when you had the chance. Also, good luck once again. Sort your shit out soon.

I should totally do this, maybe it'll make me not spend so frivolously. Also after converting this to Canadian dollars, shit is so much more expensive here. Except parking, holy fuck that is way too much just for parking.

Oh yes, please do! I'd really like to see the end result. Keying in the figures at the end of the day did make me not want to blow everything I had and be more careful. I can't tell you how many times it stopped me from making a useless purchase. On a related note, I'm not even that much of a drinker and it already costed me close to 1k, I'd imagine a person who drinks more than me and smokes cigarettes too would end up spending a godly amount of money. Scary thought, that. I pay anywhere from RM9 to RM11 per day on average (anywhere from 7-9 hours) for parking where I work daily, on the busiest month of last year it came up to RM289 while the least busiest month costed me RM151. How much is it over there?

It's handy not having spent any money yet this year. I'll have to start carrying a pen/pencil and paper with me to document this.

That is a lot for alcohol. I would only think I spend like a max of two hundred on it a year, but the amount I drink averages like once every two months. I don't get how people drink every weekend and still function as people.

Maybe it's just because you can't avoid having to pay for parking then. If you have to pay to park here it's anywhere between $1-$5 an hour depending on where you are. But unless you have to be in a parking garage you can usually just walk a little farther and park for free.

You could always key it on your phone first.

200CAD? That's roughly RM650-ish I think. Once every two months is really good. At the beginning of last year, I was out drinking... I mean, wine tasting with a friend damn near every weekend for 3 months. That racked up quite a bit I guess, since I did pay for her on some occasions. But I also did spend 3 months completely alcohol-free. I do know people who are like that though, they get plastered every weekend. Mostly those corporate execs from the looks of it.

Eek, $5 an hour sounds steep. I wish there were more free parking around here. I really wouldn't mind walking if I lived and worked near enough. One of the reasons why I loved Melbourne (if you live in the city that is). Everything is so easily accessible!

Yeah, but my phone is untrustworthy.

Haha, when I first learned about wine tasting I never knew that they were supposed to spit out the wine so I was always super confused as to how they weren't super drunk by the end of it. Actually, having had wine, that sounds like a terrible job. You have to taste all the grossness of wine but you don't actually get drunk from it? Who would want that? They're probably all closet alcoholics.

I've only ever seen $5 an hour in places where people are constantly moving in and out like the hospital, which also has a $20-ish for the whole day option. I think like $2 an hour is average.

I think a large part of the parking situation here is that our public transit is really really crappy in comparison to other cities. Like, you essentially don't need a car in places like Tokyo or San Francisco. But I guess they're both more compact than Edmonton and running trains and extra bus routes would cost more to have less people using them so it's a trade-off.

Oh, that's just the worst kind of phone.

Actually, I wonder why they just don't drink it too. They're just supposed to take a sip, and not a big gulp right? Plus, wouldn't the taste linger longer if you spit it out? :stare: Oh well. But, wait! You don't like wine? Both red & white?

Ah, okay. Fair enough. We pay about RM1 to RM2 per hour at most places here as well. There was one time though when I followed my colleague to a meeting and we parked at the building, RM6 for half an hour. Pricey, pricey.

Mmmhmm.

The only wine I've ever liked is ice wine but that's because it's super sweet.

Thanks! You could try keeping tab as well. ;) Hahaha I know, while I was working on it, it did also remind me of something that looked very AirAsia-ish. Probably because of the colors. Happy New Year to you too!
